Dr. Michael Burry
Dr. Burry is a renowned hedge fund manager who was one of the first investors to recognize the impending subprime mortgage crisis. His ability to see opportunities where others do not is legendary: a single set of trades shorting the subprime real estate market resulted in a $700 million return for his investors and a $100 million personal profit. Dr. Burry is profiled in the books “The Greatest Trade Ever” by Wall Street Journal reporter Gregory Zuckerman and “The Big Short” by Michael Lewis.
Rob Brennan
Rob is widely considered a pioneer of the modern CMBS industry. He is currently a Senior Managing Director at Guggenheim Partners and runs the Firm’s commercial real estate finance business. During his 30+ year Wall Street career, Brennan has worked in nearly every aspect of real estate, including trading, origination, structuring and banking, and asset management. He co-founded Column Financial, one of Wall Street’s longest-running commercial mortgage conduit lenders, and was the global head of Credit Suisse’s Real Estate Finance and Securitization Group. His team was responsible for creating many industry innovations in transaction structures, loan programs, new products and new markets. Rob also held roles at DLJ, UBS Securities, L.F. Rothschild and E.F. Hutton. He is a graduate of The University of Vermont and holds an MBA from New York University’s Stern School of Business. He sits on the board of the CRE Finance Council and is a member of The Real Estate Roundtable’s President’s Council.
Chris Warmuth
Chris is president of City National Bank and is responsible for City National’s corporate banking, commercial banking, and private client services as well as its entertainment, real estate and branch banking activities. City National has $32.6 billion in total assets. During his 35-year banking career, Chris has held a variety of positions in business and real estate lending, corporate banking and consumer credit as well as risk management.
Hardeep Walia
Hardeep is the CEO and founder of Motif Investing, an intuitive way to invest in concepts. He spent more than six years at Microsoft, where he was General Manager of the company’s enterprise services business, and prior to that was a Director of Corporate Development and Strategy, helping to oversee Microsoft’s investments and acquisitions. He started his career at The Boston Consulting Group. He holds a BS in Economics and Engineering from Yale and an MBA from the Wharton School of Business. He holds Series 7, 63 and 24 licenses in the securities industry, is an active member of FINRA’s Small-Firm Advisory Board, serves on FINRA’s Technology Advisory Committee and contributes frequently to Bloomberg TV, CNBC, Fox Business and Forbes.
Adam Nash
Adam is the CEO of Wealthfront. He joined Wealthfront from Greylock Partners, where he was an Executive-in-Residence. Prior to Greylock, he was VP of Product Management at LinkedIn, where he built the teams responsible for core product, user experience, platform and mobile. Adam previously held a number of leadership roles at eBay, including Director of eBay Express, as well as strategic and technical roles at Atlas Venture Preview Systems and Apple. Adam holds an MBA from Harvard Business School and BS and MS degrees in Computer Science from Stanford University. He is a proven advocate for development of products that go beyond utility to delight customers.
Doug Holte
Doug is President of Irvine Company Office Properties, where he oversees California’s largest office portfolio, in excess of 40 million square feet. Doug joined the Irvine Company in 2009 after a 22-year career as a principal in development, investment and asset management with the international real estate firm Hines. At Hines, Doug was responsible for more than 20 million square feet of office development, property acquisition and third-party client service assignments.
Barry L. Ritholtz
Barry is the Founder and chief investment officer of Ritholtz Wealth Management which manages over $175 Million in assets. He is widely known for creating and writing the Big Picture financial blog and is a frequent commentator on Bloomberg. Barry was recently named one of the “15 Most Important Economic Journalists” in the US, and has been called one of The 25 Most Dangerous People in Financial Media. He writes a daily column for Bloomberg View and a twice monthly column on Personal Finance and Investing for The Washington Post, and was also the author of the popular “Apprenticed Investor” columns at TheStreet.com. He is also widely credited as being one of the few strategists who saw the coming housing implosion and derivative mess far in advance.
Charles Thompson
Charles is the founder and president of Evergreen Residential, which currently is the developer and operator of over 2,000 garden apartments in the Southeast. He has 35 years of experience in the acquisition and development of commercial real estate and during that time has navigated various business cycles. Under the leadership of Charles, Evergreen Residential was well positioned after the subprime mortgage crisis and made numerous advantageous acquisitions to expand the Evergreen Residential portfolio. Charles holds a BA in Economics from Tufts University and a MBA from Boston University.
Michael L. Matkins
Mike is a founding partner of Allen Matkins and one of the country’s leading lawyers in real estate development and finance. For more than 35 years, he has advised institutional investors, lenders, property owners, and developers in all aspects of purchase, sale, and financing of properties ranging from office and retail to recreational and mixed-use projects. Michael has been involved in numerous multi-hundred-million-dollar real property asset portfolio acquisitions and dispositions. He has also represented institutional investors in the restructuring of substantial investments in California real property, as well as institutional developers in acquiring, entitling, and developing master-planned communities. Michael is a frequent speaker on real estate and finance trends for various professional organizations.
JR Johnson
JR is currently CEO and Founder of Trippy.com, a Sequoia Capital-backed startup. Previously, JR founded VirtualTourist.com, which he grew to become one of the largest online travel communities in the world. VirtualTourist was acquired by Expedia / TripAdvisor in 2008 for $85 million.
Kevin Miller
Kevin, a founding member of Thorofare Capital, leads origination and oversees all aspects of the Partnership. Under his leadership, the Partnership’s predecessor funds successfully originated and serviced over $800 million of loans. He offers experience in several capacities required for successful real estate investment banking, including the performance of market and financial feasibility analysis and working with borrowers, appraisers and title insurers to streamline the funding process. Kevin is an active member of the Urban Land Institute and the Men’s Guild of the Children’s Hospital of Los Angeles. Additionally, he sits on the Board of Directors for the University of Southern California’s Marshall Partners. Kevin graduated from the University of Southern California’s School of Letters Arts & Sciences’ Economics Program and is a frequent guest lecturer at USC.
Othman Laraki
Othman has founded several companies including his current venture, Color Genomics, which provides accessible, population-scale genetics services. His previous company, Mixer Labs, was acquired by Twitter where he was VP of Product focused on growth, revenue & international expansion. Before that he was a product manager at Google. Othman is an active investor and advisor in a number of notable companies, including Pinterest, TreasureData, and AngelList. He has an MBA from MIT and a BS + MS in Computer Science & Industrial Engineering from Stanford.
George Duncan III
George is a Managing Director at Guggenheim Partners where he manages a deal team credited with originating and underwriting in excess of $2 billion of real estate loans. Financings include mortgage and mezzanine loans on all major real estate asset classes. Prior to Guggenheim, George was the Chief Operating Officer at Fisher Brothers. Before that, George held a senior underwriting position at Wachovia, where he oversaw the underwriting of over $25 billion of real estate loans and worked on some of the largest transactions in the commercial real estate sector to date.
